The first Bookmobile traveled the county between 1934 and 1953. Since the Library had no branches at the time, it was the only library available to many residents of Kanawha County.

After many years on the road, the original bookmobile was retired. In 1953, with help from the Kanawha County Board of Education, a new Bookmobile was purchased. It is seen here on its rounds in the summer of 1954.

Bookmobile number three had a distinctive pink color as a result of a design contest. The Bookmobile with an exterior showing bookcases and a reader made its way around the county until it said farewell in August of 1990.

By July of 1990 the Library had raised the $82,000 needed for a new Bookmobile. It has the capacity for 3,500 items. The items carried include adult and children's books, large type books, videos, cassettes, and compact discs.It is seen here at the August 1990 party celebrating its launch. The Bookmobile now has 29 stops serving the community and schools. As it travels across the county, the staff check out on average of 300 books a day.
