Green and Sustainable Features

The new Main Library will incorporate current concepts for sustainable design and energy conservation:

• Energy efficient, well insulated building with Low-E glazing
• Light reflecting roof surface
• Natural day lighting
• Non-toxic and low VOC materials
• Long-life environmentally-friendly building products
• Water saving plumbing fixtures
• Non-potable water usage for toilets and site irrigation
• High-efficiency boilers and chillers
• Computerized building energy management
• Heat reclamation for all outside-air ventilation
• Vegetated Green Roof with low energy lamps and ballasts
• Photo sensors to dim lights when daylight is sufficient and occupancy sensors to control/reduce lighting, heating, and cooling when rooms are unoccupied
• Pervious concrete pavement

These features and many more are anticipated to qualify the new Main Library for LEED silver certification, a rating system of the U.S. Green Building Council.
