“Blade Runner”: The Book and the Movie: A Discussion The 1982 film “Blade Runner” will be shown at the Main Library on November 27, with discussion of both the film and book to follow on December 4. This two-part science fiction film/book series will be presented by West Virginia State University professor Karen Anderson. It will focus on the 1982 film “Blade Runner,” directed by Ridley Scott and starring Harrison Ford and Sean Young, as well as the 1968 novel upon which the film is loosely based, Philip K. Dick’s “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” This series coincides with the 2017 theatrical release of “Blade Runner 2049”, a sequel to the 1982 film, celebrating its thirty-fifth anniversary this year. “Blade Runner” has often been categorized as a cult film, with a large following; it blurs the boundaries of science fiction and noir, using Dick’s dystopian novel as a springboard. Anderson has also worked for the UCLA Film & Television Archive and the American Film Institute Louis B. Mayer Library. “Blade Runner” (117 minutes) is rated R. A limited number of copies of the book will be available at the Reference Desk.
