The Foreign Policy Association's Great Decisions Discussion 2018 Join us the third Monday of each month through November for the Foreign Policy Association’s Great Decisions Discussion. This national program is designed to engage citizens in learning about the world, and it emphasizes discussion and active participation from those attending. Each participant gets briefing books that feature impartial, thought-provoking analyses on eight issues of concern to U.S. policymakers today and will then be asked to report, either individually or as part of a group, on a specific topic. An organizational meeting will be held this month. Everyone welcome.

PALS Book Club This book club was formed especially for seniors by Highmark PALS (People Able to Lend Support) in order to bring older adults together for a literary challenge and social interaction. The groups meet once a month except in December. If you are eligible for Medicare, are interested in making new friends and enjoy discussing new books, contact your local library for more information. This month's title is "My Name is Lucy Barton" by Elizabeth Strout.

Brooklyn by Colm Toibin: A Discussion Join us for a discussion of "Brooklyn" by Colm Toibin. Many themes are explored in this book about a young woman who leaves her home in Ireland in the 1950s to make a new life for herself in Brooklyn. Toibin is considered one of Ireland's foremost novelists in the twenty-first century. He was awarded the Costa Award for "Brooklyn" in 2009. This award is given both for high literary merit and for works that are enjoyable reading, whose aim is to convey the enjoyment of reading to the widest possible audience. A film adaptation of the novel was released in 2015. Copies of the book are limited and can be picked up at the Reference Desk.

Struggle for Freedom is a 45-minute production that seeks to honor the American Civil Rights Movement. The life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. provides the backdrop to scenes that recreate the Montgomery bus boycott, the March on Washington, the Woolworth Sit-ins and much more. Sunday Jams: Spencer Elliott Our long running family music series is back by popular demand! People of all ages are invited to hear live music performed in a relaxed setting. Today's performer, Spencer Elliott, taught himself to play the acoustic guitar in the modern finger style in 2007. "Spencer's music is definitely unique.
