Ireland: A Community in West Virginia Ireland is an unincorporated community in Lewis County, West Virginia. Each spring the families of Ireland, West Virginia hold an Irish Spring Festival which includes St. Patrick's Day and the time of the Vernal Equinox. It is a celebration of their Scots - Irish heritage, but just as much a celebration of awakening, the Appalachian Spring. Learn more about this vibrant community from residents Denton and Sandy King. Scottish Smallpipe Concert Join us for a journey through the “Scottish Lowlands.” From bellow-blown smallpipes to art and literature, this half-hour program features the sights and sounds of “lowland country.” The program will also include a Scottish dance performance by Savanna Brown of Charleston. The presenter, Sarah Marchio, attended the Invermark School of Piping, the Balmoral School of Piping, and The College of Piping in Glasgow, Scotland where she earned a Senior Certificate from the Institute of Piping. During her years of study at the Gaelic College of Piping in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Sarah began playing Scottish Small Pipes. She has won several awards and is a native of Harwich, Massachusetts. Light refreshments will be provided, courtesy of The Friends of The Library Foundation.

Margaret Rush: Irish Songs and Circle Dancing for Children Margaret Rush, a traditional Irish singer and guitarist from Dublin, Ireland, now living in Raleigh, North Carolina, will lead an interactive, fun, musical and movement experience for young children and their grown-ups. Bring along babies, toddlers and children up to 7 years old, to a 45-minute class including songs, movement, musical props, and of course lots of fun and silliness – all through Irish music! Parents and caregivers, get ready to participate! This activity is an informal, non-performance-oriented musical experience--developmentally appropriate for children and easy for parents and caregivers, regardless of their own musical ability. Margaret will be joined by fiddler Andi Hearn to provide live jigs, reels and polkas. Together, they are members of the Irish music trio Beeswing (www.beeswingmusic.com). Light refreshments will be provided, courtesy of The Friends of The Library Foundation. Ages birth to 7 years, plus parents.

Baa, Baa, Black(face) Sheep Petting Zoo Several Scottish Blackface sheep will be on the library walkway for kids young and old to see. The Scottish Blackface is the most common breed of domestic sheep in the United Kingdom. This tough and adaptable breed is often found in the more exposed locations, such as the Scottish Highlands or roaming on the moors of Dartmoor.

Sunday Jams: Appalachian Celtic Consort Enjoy a wee bit o' the Celtic Isles in the hills of West Virginia at this performance by Appalachian Celtic Consort. They will perform traditional Irish and Scottish music as well as some old-time and original compositions.
