West Virginia Book Festival Writing Workshop by Meredith Sue Willis Revising Your Novel: Making Your Book the Best it Can Be - Most people who write are good at sentences and dialogue and description. Many are also good at storytelling and plotting. But once the first inspiration is on the screen or page – once the writer has a draft of a novel – what happens next? At this point, too many of us tinker endlessly with the opening paragraph. We polish our sentences and tighten our pages endlessly. This is, of course, essential to good writing, but it doesn’t do much for the novel as a whole. This workshop will suggest a number of concrete strategies aimed at giving the novel greater coherence, stronger structure, and more powerful momentum. The session will include remarks by the presenter, brief written and thinking exercises and time for questions, sharing and discussion. This workshop will be presented by Meredith Sue Willis, a popular workshop leader and lecturer in the northeast and Appalachia. She previously presented “Ten Strategies to Start your Novel,” at the 2010 West Virginia Book Festival. Registration is required and is limited to 140 participants. For more information about the West Virginia Book Festival, visit www.wvbookfestival.org.

West Virginia Book Festival Writing Workshop by Jake Stump and Brad Stalnaker Writing "Musket’s Big Adventure: A Quest to Find the Gold and Blue Mountains" - Most writers who are lucky enough to get published never get to pick the artwork, typography, photos or even the illustrator for their printed work. The children’s book, “Musket’s Big Adventure: A Quest to Find the Gold and Blue Mountains,” was completely written, designed and illustrated by West Virginians. Jake Stump, from Terra Alta, and Brad Stalnaker, from Elkins, have spent the last couple of years visiting schools, libraries and daycares throughout West Virginia to present the making of a mascot. In this workshop, Stump and Stalnaker will read excerpts from the book and show the process of making a book from start to finish. They will also show how children can write, illustrate and make their own books. Children who are interested in writing and adults who are interested in writing children’s books are encouraged to attend. Registration is required and is limited to 48 participants. For more information about the West Virginia Book Festival, visit www.wvbookfestival.org.
