“Blade Runner”: The Book and the Movie: A Discussion The 1982 film “Blade Runner” will be shown at the Main Library on November 27, with discussion of both the film and book to follow on December 4. This two-part science fiction film/book series will be presented by West Virginia State University professor Karen Anderson. It will focus on the 1982 film “Blade Runner,” directed by Ridley Scott and starring Harrison Ford and Sean Young, as well as the 1968 novel upon which the film is loosely based, Philip K. Dick’s “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” This series coincides with the 2017 theatrical release of “Blade Runner 2049”, a sequel to the 1982 film, celebrating its thirty-fifth anniversary this year. “Blade Runner” has often been categorized as a cult film, with a large following; it blurs the boundaries of science fiction and noir, using Dick’s dystopian novel as a springboard. Anderson has also worked for the UCLA Film & Television Archive and the American Film Institute Louis B. Mayer Library. “Blade Runner” (117 minutes) is rated R. A limited number of copies of the book will be available at the Reference Desk.

Hands On With Virtual Reality Join us at the library for an introduction to Virtual Reality and get a chance to try out the library’s new Virtual Reality headsets with a brief demo! Headsets and time for demos will be limited based on the number of attendees. Attendees will need to provide their own cell phone and download the Google Cardboard app (for Android or iPhone) prior to the program. The program will run for two hours.

Drop in to socialize with other families and play with toys reserved just for this age group. We provide the toys and clean up the mess, and you need only to provide the energetic youngster!

Coast to Coast: Contemporary American Writers Reading and Discussion Group This book discussion series focuses on some new voices in contemporary American literature. This month's selection is "Swamplandia!" by Karen Russell. The group meets the first Thursday of each month September 2017 through May 2018. Discussion leader is Tim Basford. Tales to Tails: Read to the Dog Let your young readers practice their reading skills by reading their favorite holiday book to a trained and friendly therapy dog! Reading aloud boosts confidence and self esteem. Readers from kindergarten through 6th grade are welcome to participate in this drop-in program.
