"My pleasure in writing the children's books has been to create stories I'd like my own daughters to read." - Janet Shaw
When Author Janet Shaw was a child, she read herself to sleep regularly by hiding a book and a flashlight under her pillow. She enjoyed adventures and frequently acted out exciting sword fights or stories about wild horses with her younger brother.
As a mother, Janet knows how important reading is! When her three children were young, she used to load them into the family's red wagon and take them to the library. At the library, the family filled the wagon with so many books that the children had to walk home!
Janet Shaw lives in Asheville, N.C., and is the author of the American Girl Collections about the characters Kaya, a Nez Perce girl who lives in the Pacific Northwest in 1764, and Kirsten, an immigrant from Sweden who moves to Minnesota in 1854.
When she was researching the Kaya books, Janet met with Nez Perce tribal members to create her character. Janet has said that "Kaya's personality combines daring, courage, strength of spirit, and a determination to do right."
