Newspapers & Obituaries

We have the local papers on microfilm—Charleston Daily Mail 1914 to date and the Charleston Gazette 1924 to date. An index going back to 1985 is maintained by the newspapers and can be accessed from our guide to online resources. The newspapers do not charge to use the index, but do charge users to view articles online.

To get copies of obituaries, you must write a letter with the name of the deceased and the date of death. There is a limit of 4 obituary requests at a time. A quarter should be included for each copy. A self-addressed, stamped envelope should be enclosed with the request. Letters should be sent to:
