Children learn skills that will help them learn how to read and write long before they start school. When do they start? In INFANCY and through the first 5 years of life! The library has adopted the Every Child Ready to Read @ your library® project, so that we can help you get your child ready to learn how to read before starting school. Our Early Literacy program can help you get your child ready to learn how to read in school!
Every Child Ready to Read @ your library® is a program of the Public Library Association and the Association for Library Service to Children, divisions of the American Library Association. Every Child Ready to Read @ your library® is a registered trademark and is used with permission.

Not only is the Summer Library Club full of reading adventures, but it is an important part of a child's educational growth. Studies show that children who continue to read during the summer are better prepared for the upcoming school year. Kanawha County Public Library takes a leadership role in keeping children reading by providing excellent resources and quality programming.
The club is offered each year to children ages birth-12 years with special thematic activities planned and prizes awarded.
Splish, Splash, Read

This year's summer library club, 'Splish, Splash, Read,' begins June 7 and runs through July 26. Combining free programs with great reading and other rewarding activities, the club allows children ages 12 and under to earn prizes by reading or listening to books.
Rock 'n' Read

The teen summer reading club starts June 5 and runs through July 26. “Teens may read anything they like, including graphic novels, audiobooks, their school’s summer reading assignment, fiction or nonfiction, just as long as it’s a KCPL-owned book,” said Amy Arey, the program’s coordinator.
Read Aloud & Storytime Programming
The library offers several programming options for parents and their children, because you are your child's most important teacher. Storytime programs help your child develop reading and early literacy skills that are fundamental building blocks for success in school. Read aloud programs help the family develop these basic building blocks by continuing to read.
Family Read Aloud Club – This program invites parents to read aloud to their children during the school year. The aim of the program is two-fold: for families to spend quality time together and to promote lifelong literacy.
Storytime offerings include:
- Baby & Me – Storytime program designed for ages birth to 18 months plus parent/caregiver. This includes songs and other activities that are age appropriate.
- Tiny Tots – Storytime program designed for ages 18 to 36 months plus parent/caregiver. This includes songs and other activities that are age appropriate.
- Born to Read – a program for ages birth to 36 months plus the parent/caregiver. This includes songs and other activities that are age appropriate.
- Books-N-More – a program for children ages 3-5 plus the parent/caregiver. This includes songs, games and other activities that are age appropriate.
